This Week On Billboard: T.I. f. Rihanna - Live Your Life

This Week On Billboard is where I unabashedly critique the current no. 1 hit on Billboard.com, the major yardstick for what's "hot" in music today. In order to simplify the review for those who don't want to read the whole article, each song is given a "!" rating, in which the finest grabs five of them.

I am an adherent of this current movement in pop music that cuts the middle man between rap singles and dance remixes; but sampling O-Zone’s “Dragostea Din Tei”? The “Numa Numa” song? Is the world of hip-hop running out of places to sample from?

With that mentioned, it actually works once you get pass the distracting intro, where producer Just Blaze is using the vocal hook more blatantly. Also, this is where Rihanna excels, where she’s used like a synth layer. I think we’re a year removed from seeing a “Rihanna” instrument in Korg’s latest keyboard, right next to “T-Pain’s auto-tune” and “Timbaland’s vocal/drum kits”.

Borrowing tunes that people already know (and love) sure is a ticket to the billboard charts. It's apparently rihanna's approach for instant liking. Smart, but oh so lazy. thou makest music is not like this.
