This Week On Billboard: Soulja Boy - Crank That (Soulja Boy)

This Week On Billboard is where I unabashedly critique the current no. 1 hit on Billboard.com, the major yardstick for what's "hot" in music today. In order to simplify the review for those who don't want to read the whole article, each song is given a "!" rating, in which the finest grabs five of them.

!!!!

The steel drums are meagerly laid out, catering to my endearment for minimal production. The dance itself, which is a garnished version of all the snap dances, is complicated, I guess. But the song moves in a slow enough tempo that everyone can get it after a few attempts. Sure, the catch phrases are pretty moronic and the song would work the same if you boil it down to ten seconds and run it on a loop; What is important, though, is that it's all very enjoyable. Unfortunately for Soulja Boy, history proves that songs created for a dance craze have a difficult time duplicating its success (see: Los Del Rio, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Dem Franchise Boyz).
