This Week On Billboard: Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girls
This Week On Billboard is where I unabashedly critique the current no. 1 hit on Billboard.com, the major yardstick for what's "hot" in music today. In order to simplify the review for those who don't want to read the whole article, each song is given a "!" rating, in which the finest grabs five of them.
The song was on the verge of working. The melody is splendid enough; but that damn "Stand By Me" sample. It's unfortunate that a sample would be an issue, but I can hardly think of a more played out song to reference. Sean's voice would've been charming and delightful if he didn't pronounce "girl" like "guuurowul". The use of the vocoder here is amateur, even if it's not as abhorrent as it has been used in other recent songs. As utterly inappropriate as the "suicidal, suicidal" bit, it's a great vocal hook.
